The first step to creating a tailored treatment plan is to understand what addictions you need help with. There are two types of addiction and you may fall into one category or both.
Following a discussion of your reasons for quitting and why you are addicted to cigarettes, we, together, prepare your own personalised treatment plan, including the following steps.
There are several different treatments available to help you beat your addiction and reduce withdrawal symptoms.
This outline follows the recommendations from NHS.
The best treatment for you will depend on your personal preference, your age, whether you’re pregnant or breastfeeding and any medical conditions you have.
Research has shown that all these methods can be effective. Importantly, evidence shows that they are most effective if used alongside support from a stop smoking advisor.
The main reason that people smoke is because they are addicted to nicotine. The good news is that nicotine replacement therapy e.g. using e-cigarettes or nicotine patches will minimise these feelings.
Where to get medications and how to use them
You will receive your nicotine medications through an NHS prescription from your local pharmacy or by post. Nicotine preparations are available as:
E-cigarettes are the most popular form of treatment and have been shown to be twice as effective as other nicotine medications**
Patches release nicotine slowly throughout the day and reduce your urges to smoke. Some are worn all the time, and some should be taken off at night. E-cigarettes, inhalators, gum, and sprays act more quickly and may be better for helping with cravings.
There is good evidence to show that using a combination of NRT is more effective than using a single product.
The treatment of choice is a disposable e-cigarette MyloGo and the patch.
Treatment with nicotine usually lasts 8-12 weeks, before you gradually reduce the dose so that you become tobacco and nicotine FREE!
Who can use it
Most people are able to use NRT, including:
Possible side effects
Side effects of NRT can include:
Any side effects are usually mild. But if they’re particularly troublesome, your advisor can alter the dose or type of NRT.
