Otherwise, we advise you to visit your GP due to potential interactions with the above treatments and quitting smoking or taking medications to quit smoking.

We will call you at the time you book in your appointment for.

Firstly, we discuss the reasons why you are making this potentially life-changing decision to quit smoking. We discuss the benefits to your current and future health and how we can help you build and sustain your motivation to quit.

The good news is that you will feel the health benefits of quitting straight away. For example, blood pressure, which is elevated by smoking is reduced. Also, raised carbon monoxide levels in your blood, because of smoking, return to normal, within one day of quitting, providing you with more energy and less susceptibility to infections such as colds and flu.

Your chest will feel clear and persistent coughs should stop or reduce within 3 days. You will also be able to get back your sense of taste and smell and enjoy food again.

Secondly, we try to understand why you are addicted to cigarettes. Many of our patients are aware that it is nicotine that you are addicted to, and which is in the cigarette smoke you breathe in. Nicotine happens to be a safe chemical, when compared with the other seven thousand chemicals in a cigarette. Sixty of these have been linked to cancer. Nicotine gives us a pleasurable sensation. Patients often describe this effect when they have their first cigarette of the day. The Quit Clinic smoking programme provides you with advice on clinically proven prescription treatments which contain nicotine and help you quit by reducing your urge to smoke.

Thirdly we discuss the most appropriate therapy for you and suggest how you can receive these treatments.
